Otago Boys' High School lost the war 4-3 but won the First XV battle during the traditional interschool with Christ's College in Christchurch yesterday.

The home school collected wins in the basketball (86-66), debating, senior football (2-0) and hockey (6-0). The junior football match was a 3-3 draw but OBHS recorded a 5-0 win in the squash and won both rugby games.

Its Second XV dispatched its opponent 56-14 and the First XV won 28-9 after leading 11-9 at the break.

''They are a very good team and have very good players across the park,'' OBHS coach Ryan Martin said.

''They were competing really well with us in the first half. But we reset what we were doing for the second half and probably should have scored another two tries if we were really disciplined.''

OBHS scored 17 unanswered points in the second spell. Second five-eighth Burns Mills was instrumental in the victory.

He set up the best try of the game when he burst down the blindside from a scrum and passed to winger Max Brown, who provided the finish.

Openside flanker Taine Te Whata dominated the breakdown with his physicality.

Waitaki Boys' High School hosted Southland Boys' High School in an interschool fixture in Oamaru yesterday.

Southland Boys' won 4-2, including a convincing 38-6 win in the First XV game. The visitors were too strong and skilful for their opponent. The senior basketball was a close encounter and Waitaki won a thriller 73-72. Its other win was a commanding 6-1 win in the football.

Southland won the trapshooting, smallbore and badminton.
