The Christchurch team of Tina Targett, Chris Taylor and Karen Steven won a closely-fought final at the New Zealand women's triples championships in Dunedin yesterday.

They beat the Caversham combination of Yvonne Ashton, Pam Baird and Maureen Brown 13-11 at the Caversham Petanque Club.

Targett and Taylor were members of the New Zealand team that beat Australia in the transtasman test in Melbourne in May.

They demonstrated their experience throughout the championships, and particularly in the semifinal, when they applied early pressure on their opponents.

They needed it in the final to come from behind and win the game.

It was a tense game in the race to 13 points and the Caversham combination held a narrow lead in the final stages of the game.

It led 8-7 and the win was in its grasp when it led 11-10.

In the semifinals the Christchurch team took control early to beat the composite team of Diane Findlay (Christchurch), Anne Sinclair (Caversham) and Marilyn Bunce (Alexandra) 13-4.

In the other semifinal, between two Caversham teams, Ashton's team beat Kathleen Wallace, Julie Carrick and Kelsey Bradshaw 13-10.

Bradshaw, at 21 the youngest player in the championships, is a New Zealand youth representative.

The plate final was won by Caryll Brake, Lorna Collins and Susan Brown (Waikouaiti), who beat Kay George, Jenny Garth and Sharron Olsen (St Kilda) 13-9.

The bowl final was won by the composite team of Mavis Thompson, Sandra Hay and Janet Goodin.

The oldest player in the tournament was Doris Hammond (88), of Waikouaiti, while Joan Godman, of Dunedin, is 82.

The championship was to have been held in Christchurch but the earthquakes there forced the change of venue.
