There are 48 teams participating in the two-day event at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin this weekend.
Tournament director Barrie Kendall said 44 tables were being used to cater for the seven grades of the competition. There are 144 players competing.
The tournament is held at different venues in the South Island.
It was held in Oamaru last year and next year it will be held at Hokitika.
The event started yesterday and finals are scheduled to start at 3pm today.
The tournament was last held in Dunedin six years ago.
