Double-in, double-out, double top.

Yep. There is a darts tournament in Dunedin this weekend.

Time to brush up on the terminology.

That way, if someone achieves a "break of throw" with a "champagne finish", you will know they started second and nailed a bullseye to win the leg.

There is bound to be a few bullseyes too.

The Dunedin Metro Club is hosting rounds nine and 10 of the Dart Players New Zealand Grand Prix at the St Kilda Bowling Club this weekend.

Club vice-president Jenea Te Whare said the event was open to anyone, but most of the leading New Zealand players were expected to attend.

New Zealand’s four highest ranked players — Ben Robb (128 points), Haupai Puha (96 points), Kayden Milne (84 points) and Warren Parry (76 points) — have committed to playing, so the standard will be high.

"We are hoping to get about 60 each day," Te Whare said.

"But pretty much anyone who is big in the sport [in New Zealand] is definitely attending."

The event gets under way at noon on Saturday and is the first grand prix in three months, so the excitement level is high among players, Te Whare said.

There are cash prizes, but it is the ranking points on offer that the players will covet the most.

At the end of the 12 grand prix rounds, the top 16 ranked players will compete for one spot in the world championship.

That means for some of the players on the cusp of the top 16, this weekend is all about the lipstick — that is darts speak for the portion of the board where you score triple 20.
