A combination of competition, Covid, jetlag and stress led to Wanaka biathlete Campbell Wright pushing his heart rate into the danger zone at an event in Italy on Sunday.

A few days earlier, Wright’s ski times in the 10km sprint showed something was off, Biathlon NZ spokesman John Burridge said.

In the pursuit race on Sunday, the 19-year-old pushed his heart rate up to 200 beats per minute, again sparking concern.

The Olympian has now decided to take a holiday.

Wright’s father, Scott, said it was a "miracle" Campbell did not come last in the pursuit after he attacked a bunch of skiers on a hill and then "blew".

Scott, who is overseas following his son’s progress, said Campbell was "terribly tired".

"At the World Cups, he needed to be so focused and he said to me it’s incredibly stressful.

"If he makes one mistake at a World Cup, he is essentially last. Plus the year’s pressure to try to achieve Olympic selection [top 15] added more pressure."

Wright tested positive for Covid in the United States, after the Beijing Winter Olympics.

"He competed with Covid [at the junior world champs] but thought it was a simple cold. And because he was Campbell, he tried his hardest knowing he was the favourite to win the junior world champs. He was terribly disappointed."

Scott Wright said after the positive Covid test, Campbell isolated for 10 days in a hotel room and could not train.

When he went to catch his flight to Milan, he discovered his reservation had been cancelled, resulting in a sleepless 27 hours getting new flights sorted.

He arrived in Italy jetlagged and had to share a room with his coach.

"After speaking with him just now, his season is over," Scott Wright said.

"He’s officially on holiday. He’s going to travel around Europe ... and ... just be a 19-year-old. This is his career now and he knows he needs to take breaks."
