Sixty keen runners took part in the first Pigs Backyard Ultra event in a paddock near Whare Flat at the weekend.
The race, just the second backyard ultra event in New Zealand and based on an overseas concept, features runners completing 6.7km loops every hour, resting briefly, then taking off for another lap at the start of the next hour.
The winner is the last person standing.
Organiser Steve Tripp said the inaugural southern race was a "great success".
Christchurch runner Sam Harvey was the winner, completing 32 loops (214km) with a race time of 27hr 56min 36sec.
Harvey finished second behind Dunedin runner Chris Bisley at the Riverhead Backyard Ultra near Auckland last year.
Auckland runner Teddy Eyster (31 loops, 27hr 8min 9sec) was second in the Dunedin event, and Wellington runner Jub Bryant (29 loops, 25hr 6min 59sec) was third.
John Bayne was the most durable of the local runners, completing 28 loops (24hr 17min 8sec), while Kerri Dewe (Auckland) was the leading female, completing 17 laps with a race time of 14hr 25min 23sec.
