Aleisha Ruske is a water baby. She learned to swim at the age of 3 and joined Punch Tremaine's training squad when she was 9.

Ruske (13), a pupil at St Hilda's Collegiate, broke four age-group records at the Otago championships in January and her tally in the last four years is 14.

"I just love the water," she said. "If I didn't I wouldn't bother getting up for early morning training."

Ruske dominated the girls aged 12 and 13 age-group at the Otago championships and won nine of her 11 events. She was third in the other two.

She has qualified in eight events for the New Zealand age-group championships in Wellington from March 1 to March 5.

Her best prospects will be in the three events in which she broke records at the Otago championships.

She broke four records at Moana Pool: 50m freestyle (28.18sec), 50m butterfly (30.30sec) and 100m butterfly (1min 8.36sec in heat, 1min 7.66sec in final).

All the records she broke were long-term and had been held by swimmers who had made their mark at national level.

The most significant was the 100m butterfly that had been held by Olympian Liz van Welie since 1993. Van Welie won a silver medal in the 400m individual medley at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002.

The 50m freestyle has been held by Lara McCambridge since 1996 and the 50m butterfly was swum by Hannah Shanks in 1995.

Her best performance came in the 100m freestyle (1min 1.25sec) when she narrowly missed the record of 1min 1.07sec Olympian Anna Wilson set in 1991.

Ruske wants to become an international swimmer and has set herself the goal of competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

Coach Tremaine has adopted a sensible approach and is only training Ruske for one session a day at the moment. She swims four mornings a week and adds a fifth session at the weekend.

Ruske also enjoys netball, water polo, touch and cross-country and is an Otago basketball representative.

It was not any surprise Ruske topped her age division at the Otago championships. But she was not the only member of the family to excel.

Younger sister Nicole (11) won the girls aged 10 and 11 grade and brother Michael (8) also competed.
