Speed skating: Dunedin girl breaks four records

Dunedin schoolgirl Rianna Mitchell broke four New Zealand resident records at the South Island short track speed skating championships in Dunedin on Saturday.

Mitchell (16) was competing in the junior women's over-16 grade at the Dunedin Ice Stadium.

She had spent the week training with the visiting Korean team and this experience helped to lift her performance.

Mitchell's records were in the 500m (52.306sec), 800m (1min 25.112sec), 1000m (1min 49.817sec) and 1500m (2min 49.682sec).

She is a member of the New Zealand development squad preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics, to be held in Korea.

Mitchell finished runner-up to Jin Sol (Korea) in the South Island championships, taken from the combined score from the four disciplines.

Sol won with 136 points from Mitchell (84) and Lucy Burridge, of Christchurch, (52).

Sol broke New Zealand's open records in the four events: 500m (50.619sec), 800m (1min 23.222sec), 1000m (1min 42.832sec) and 1500m (2min 48.678sec).

Chris Jarden (Christchurch), the junior men's champion with 123 points, set a New Zealand resident record with his 500m time of 48.657sec in his age grade.

In the same grade, Seung Hyun Lee (Korea) set a New Zealand open record in the 800m (1min 22.634sec).

Sandra Maca (Christchurch) set four New Zealand open records in the veteran women's over 45 age group in the 500m (58.638sec), 800m (1min 35.05sec), 1000m (2min 06.025sec) and 1500m (3min 16.707sec).

Ken Howie (Christchurch) did the same in the veteran men's grade in the 500m (1min 1.04sec), 800m (1min 38.715sec), 1000m (2min 05.539sec) and 1500m (3min 10.933sec).

In the sub-junior women's grade (age 12 to 15) Korean skaters broke New Zealand open records. Hye Ji Shin set new marks in the 500m (54.038sec) and 1000m (1min 53.229sec).

Lee Seul Lim broke the 800m record with a time of 1min 30.619sec.

In the same grade Courtney Coburn (Christchurch) broke a New Zealand resident record in the 800m (1min 32.244sec) and Lily Tait (Christchurch) in the 1000m (1min 55.919sec).

Caitlin Phillips (Christchurch) broke two national resident records in the juvenile girls aged 12 to 15 grade in the 333m (35.335sec) and 500m (54.040sec).

Ethan de Rose (Christchurch) broke four New Zealand resident records in the juvenile boys grade in the 111m (14.173sec), 222m (24.831sec), 333m (36.029sec) and 500m (53.136sec).

In the primary boys under 9 grade two visiting Koreans set New Zealand open records, Sung Yeon Choi in the 111m(14.75sec) and 333m (37.38sec) and Dorg Hyun Lee in the 222m (26.92sec)
