The visiting ELE Papanui Tigers won the inaugural Waterloo Classic with a 6-3 win against Dodgers in final at Ellis Park yesterday.

But while the Christchurch club grabbed the spoils, it contributed more than it took away.

Black Sox great Thomas Makea and New Zealand player of the year Tyron Bartorillo were in Dunedin with the Tigers for the tournament and took a clinic for junior players in the morning.

Otago Softball chairwoman Sandy Wallace described it as a ''very successful'' coaching clinic.

''It started in drizzly conditions and we were a bit worried about the attendance,'' Wallace said.

''But there was over 50 kids attending and every one of them had a great time.

''I can't say enough about how much ELE Papanui contributed to Otago softball over the weekend.''

Papanui scooped many of the individual awards with Callum Muir named top batter and Reilly Makea named top pitcher.

A special mention went to King's Old Boys batter Mitchell Finnie, who hit four automatic home runs during the tournament.

The mixed grade was won by Dodgers. They beat Greenbacks 8-6 in a thrilling final.

Daniel Mulvena was the top batter and Jacob Eastwood named best pitcher.
