Two from two for Sthn Utd

The performances were disjointed, but the six points were all that mattered.

Southern United returned with wins in both its opening Futsal Super League games in Christchurch over the weekend.

A late goal to Carlos Hermann handed Southern a 4-3 win over Canterbury United on Saturday night.

Goals to Arnon Tapp and Kasam Ali gave it a 2-0 lead, but three straight to Canterbury left it chasing the game.

Ben O'Farrell eventually equalised before Hermann delivered the winner.

Yesterday, a late period of dominance helped Southern beat the same side 7-4.

It was in that period Southern showed its potential.

The intensity went up and, after going goal for goal for much of the match, Southern pulled away from a 3-3 scoreline.

Reid Hulleman scored twice in that period, while Arnon Tapp added his second for the game as O'Farrell added the other.

It was a period assistant coach James Coombes said showed the team's potential.

''I think we managed to ramp the intensity up a wee bit and they couldn't stick with us when we did that.

''What we hadn't done for the rest of that game and the game [on Saturday].

''We took that intensity up for that five or six-minute period and really showed we were quite dominant.''

Coombes said the team held the ball well, although had not been as effective as it hoped with it.

The goals were well-crafted, although there was still plenty to tidy up. That was not unexpected with a messy and abbreviated lead-in to the first game.

Despite that it was good to have points on the board with three weeks to fine-tune things before its next set of games.

''I think it's good to take the points,'' Coombes said.

''It was a bit of a disjointed weekend. Both games didn't really flow as much as we'd hoped; their game plan made it difficult for us to create many clear opportunities.

''So to take six points from our first two games is really important for us.''
