Water polo: Columba wins SI event

Columba College won the South Island secondary schools tournament in Christchurch last weekend with a 4-1 win over Christchurch Girls High School in the final.

The victory capped a remarkable comeback after the side was demolished 15-1 by Christchurch's Villa Maria in its opening match of the tournament.

Columba turned around a poor start with a comfortable win over Southland Girls High School and Marian College but lost to Rangi Ruru.

It had a good win against St Margaret's College in the quarterfinal and had an epic match with Villa Maria in the semifinal. The sides were locked 3-3 at the end of ordinary time and 4-4 after extra time. But Columba kept its cool and won the shoot-out 3-0 to progress to the final.

The victory means Columba has qualified for the New Zealand secondary schools premier tournament in Lower Hutt in April.

Columba's Stephanie Lambie was named the tournament's most valuable player, while goalkeeper Tori Hall received the most promising player award.
