Last season's star southern 3yr-old, Air Max, will return refreshed and ready for the new season at Timaru today.

The dual guineas winner has not been sighted at the races since February.

Air Max, trained at Riccarton Park by Lance Robinson, enjoyed a generous break before starting a slow buildup towards his new campaign.

Air Max is in excellent order just as the South Island's spring features approach.

"He did really well. We gave him a good spell because he had a big 3yr-old year," Robinson said.

"He has been in probably half the winter. He has done about three months' work now. He has had a nice long prep and we are really happy with him."

Today's rating 82 1200m race will serve as a starting point for Air Max before he is aimed at better spring races.

"It is hard to find a race for him in his own grade, because he is on a difficult rating.

"Timaru works out good for him because he gets in on a good weight, so we are using it as a race to give him a day out and see how we go."

Air Max will carry 56.5kg.

Though nothing has been confirmed yet, his next step is likely to be over his pet distance of 1400m.

"He really wants 1400 to 1600m. He has a good record over 1400m.

"Now that he is a year older, I don't think 1600m will be a problem to him."

Several other talented South Island gallopers will open their campaigns in the same race.

Former South Island filly of the year, Courte Zarindi, will start for the first time since November.

The 5yr-old was limited to just two starts last season in which she finished last both times.

Courte Zaridini has since transferred to the Brian and Shane Anderton stable and looked on the way back to her best when working home nicely in a recent jumpout at Wingatui.

The Andertons also have a second runner in the consistent Zabay, who is resuming.

Another rival having her first start this campaign is Clara.

The 5yr-old performed consistently after joining trainer Terri Rae's stable last season.

Clara has had two quiet trials to prepare for her resumption.

Anythingcouldhappn, another smart performer from last season,
resumes today.

The 5yr-old, trained at Rangiora by Steven Woodsford, impressed when quickly winning his way from maiden grade to open handicap ranks.

Anythingcouldhappn is in a rating 82 raceover 1600m. He will clash with former stakes-race performer Zentessa, who produced a good third in her first start of the season at Riccarton last month.

In the same race, the good winter runner, Albutme, will have his first start since racing in strong company at the Grand National carnival.
