First win has filly resting easy

Two talented trotting winners at Forbury Park on Saturday will take contrasting paths following their wins.

The Darryn Simpson-trained Pres The Bell scored her maiden win on the course in the hands of driver Blair Orange in Saturday's opening event.

The victory gives Simpson the opportunity to send the $1.80 tote favourite for a well-earned break in the spelling paddock on a positive note.

''We will put her out for a month and see what she looks like.

''She only qualified six weeks ago. We thought we would give her a couple of runs on her back door and then put her out.''

Simpson holds the 3yr-old in high regard and thinks that with time, she has a chance of emulating the deeds of her mother, Daisy Belle.

Daisy Belle scored eight wins for trainer Stu Campbell, who has a racing share in Pres The Bell.

''She is bred to be good and she is good, but she is big and weak.''

While Pres The Bell enjoys some down time, Saturday's feature trot winner, Poppymalda, will remain in work to continue to make up for lost time.

The talented but injury-plagued mare again showed her class by finishing with a big late win for trainer driver Nathan Williamson.

Poppymalda returned from 17 months away from the races in May with back-to-back wins before her injury worries flared up again when she was checked in her latest run at Invercargill, Williamson said.

''She didn't come through that run well, so I had to give her a few weeks off.

''It's not ideal for a horse with injuries.''

Poppymalda's off-side hind suspensory ligament means she is a day-to-day racing proposition, so Williamson plans to keep the mare in work and racing while she is sound and he will look for another race for her in two weeks, he said.

''It is holding up. It doesn't look pretty, but we have to keep pressing on.''
