A pair of youths accused of a citywide car stealing spree were caught after allegedly brandishing a weapon at a person in Mosgiel and smashing in a grandmother’s windscreen, police said.

Six stolen cars around Dunedin have been attributed to the pair who sparked a police hunt yesterday.

Their campaign of chaos kicked off on Saturday night when they texted the grandson of a St Clair woman they would be heading to his grandmother’s home to smash her car’s windscreen, Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman said.

They headed over and did exactly that, and fled the scene.

Just before 5pm yesterday, police were called to a Mosgiel address after two youths approached a member of the public with knife, before fleeing in a vehicle, Snr Sgt Notman said.

The vehicle was then located dumped in Calton Hill just after 6pm.

‘‘Area inquiries were made around Calton Hill with the assistance of the Police Dog Unit, and cordons were put in place,’’ Snr Sgt Benn said.

The pair were soon located and apprehended in Burnett St at about 6.10pm.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said search efforts kicked off in the afternoon when the youths initially fled police after being spotted driving a car stolen from South Rd, Caversham.

When signalled to stop yesterday, the driver fled and officers chose not to pursue.

It was not an isolated incident, Snr Sgt Benn said.

Police got a raft of reports from around Dunedin throughout yesterday of cars being stolen, or items being taken from inside vehicles.

Snr Sgt Benn thanked the public for their assistance in helping police locate the two youths.

Charges are being considered, and police are continuing to make inquiries into the alleged offending.
