A crash on Dunedin's Southern Motorway possibly proved to be too interesting for one motorist who braked heavily and caused another crash while driving past the scene.

Police were at a one-vehicle crash at 8am yesterday in the northbound lane after a car slid out on ice and collided with the concrete barrier, Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said.

About half an hour later while police were dealing with the first crash, a motorist also heading north slammed hard on the brakes directly next to the crash.

That caused the vehicle behind him to go into the back of his car.

Snr Sgt Notman stressed to motorists to be mindful when driving past a crash scene so they did not add to the problem.

He also said as winter loomed, icy morning conditions were beginning to look more likely.

Remember to slow down and drive to the conditions, keep your distance, and drive rested and unimpaired, he said.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) journey manager for Otago-Southland Nicole Felts said in a release that winter was looming, and while their contractors would be out gritting highways and adding calcium magnesium acetate, motorists should do their part too.
