A "substantial spill" of toilet paper from a truck left a section of a Dunedin motorway backed up before contractors got to the bottom of it.

Contractors from NZTA Waka Kotahi were dispatched to the southern motorway to deal with the spill at Fairfield, near the Old Brighton Road offramp.

NZTA was advised just after 1pm and the area was cleared by the contractors about an hour later.

"On paper it seemed like a simple job, but it took a little while to get to the bottom of it," an NZTA spokesman said.

Clearly getting into the spirit of the occasion, the spokesman continued: "Some of the contractors were reported to be looking a bit flushed afterwards, and others were feeling a bit wiped out.

"We hear that people will be in line for some time in loo after such a big effort."
