Jandles to make Kennedy's day

Local trainer Terry Kennedy has numbers on his side in his attempt to win the race named after him at Wingatui today.

Kennedy saddles up three horses in race 3, the Terry Kennedy Of Carefree Stables 1200m Maiden.

The attack on his own race is not just a numbers game, though, as his charges, Jandles, Aboli and Wholelotarosie, look to have more than just runners' chances.

Of the trio, Kennedy is expecting 3yr-old filly Jandles to be the hardest for rival trainers to beat, he said.

''Jandles has trialled good this time round and has a good draw (4).''

The trial Kennedy is referring to is a Wingatui jumpout earlier this month, in which she hit out strongly and ran second to a smart unnamed Cape Blanco colt from Claire Anderton's stable.

Jandles beat subsequent Riverton winner Slammer.

The run signalled Jandles had returned a stronger prospect than when she last campaigned earlier in the season.

Part of the reason for her progression could be attributed to her slow and steady buildup back to peak fitness.

''She has been in work a long time.''

Kennedy's first-starter in race 3, Aboli, also ran second on the same Wingatui jumpouts programme and there is form around that performance, too.

The Darci Brahma gelding was runner-up to Turbulence, who ran on nicely for third in 2yr-old company at Riverton over Easter.

The third of the Kennedy runners in race 3, Wholelotarosie, is not without her share of ability, but has not fared well by drawing 12 for the 1200m race.

Kennedy's big numbers also extend to today's opening race, over 800m.

There, No Charge, to be ridden by Krishna Mudhoo, has drawn 12.

His other runner, Janefield Jewel, jumps from closer in at barrier 5 and Kennedy expects her rider, Jacob Lowry, to have her right on the pace.

''She is a speed horse.''

''I probably prefer Janefield Jewel to No Charge.''

Both horses registered top-five finishes in their last starts, but Janefield Jewel could have finished even closer in her run for fifth, Kennedy said.

''She definitely should have been a lot closer the other day. She got checked about 60m off the line.''

The trainer has his ever-consistent, yet rarely winning galloper, Landales Gold, in race 2 today.

The 5yr-old never got into his rhythm in a slowly run race at Riverton last start, but should get more suitable conditions today.

Landales Gold has raced well on his home track before and the track, which yesterday was rated a slow8, should suit him.

The galloper should also go into today's race in a good frame of mind after being schooled over fences this week, Kennedy said.

''There should be no excuses.''

The hardest horses for Landles Gold to hold out may come from trainers who are well accustomed to having multiple runners in the same race.

Balcairn trainers John and Karen Parsons have brought a big team.

It includes the consistent trio of Villa Elba, Darci Inn and Lin, who take on Landales Gold.

Among the trainers' best chances outside of race 2 are Pippi Rea in race 5, Enzedjewel in race 6 and Final Shinko in race 9.
