Northern success with southern bloodlines continues

Whanganui father and son Raymond and Mark Connors extended their incredible record with southern bloodlines with the win of Prince Oz at Wingatui yesterday.

The Neil Ridley-trained galloper kept his unbeaten record in the South Island intact in winning race 5.

The style of Prince Oz's victory suggested to his rider, Terry Moseley, that it would not be the horse's last.

``He is a little bit better than average,'' he said.

``I'm not saying he is a top-class horse yet.

But he is definitely better than a two-win horse; he could be a handicapper.''

The key to the horse winning more races could be in whether he jumps cleanly from the starting gates.

The horse got nervy while waiting in the barriers, but managed to jump well yesterday, Moseley said.

Prince Oz is by O'Reilly from Seasoned Star mare Royal Princess, who was bred by Brian and Hec Anderton.

The Connors also raced star jumpers Wise Men Say and Hypnotise and dual New Zealand Cup winner Blood Brotha, who were all bred on the Taieri.

Brian Anderton produced a winner with bloodlines from even further south yesterday.

He and son Shane trained Cabernet to win race 1 by more than four lengths.

The impressive filly is raced by brothers Grant and Brent McKenzie and their wives, Philippa and Mo.

The Southland family is not just good at producing fast horses. Brent and Mo McKenzie are the parents of Chiefs rugby stars Damian and Marty McKenzie.

Cabernet was unlikely to campaign deep into the winter and was likely to be spelled after one or two more starts, Shane Anderton said.

The filly's trainers were using yesterday's 800m sprint to get a line on where she was at and her commanding win told them loud and clear that she was above average.

The Anderton stable won the first two races at Wingatui yesterday when Satin Guru gained a deserved win in race 2 under rider Shankar Muniandy.

Riverton trainer Kelvin Tyler continued his hot run of recent form by also landing a winning double on yesterday's programme.

Tyler produced upset wins when The Czar ($19) won race 3 and Lochan Ora ($22) won race 6.

Lochan Ora has now won three of his six starts at Wingatui.
