Agnus Brown keeps learning all the time and Shankar Muniandy hopes the education will produce a good report card at Oamaru today.
Muniandy jumps aboard the Magnus mare for her third career start, and her second run in this campaign, in race 5, a 1400m maiden.
She has shown good barrier speed in her first two starts, although Muniandy said that could be due to her inexperience.
''She's got a little bit of learning to do,'' he said.
''She tries to do everything at 100 miles an hour. She tries to jump and run. But tomorrow, she hasn't got the draw to jump and run.''
The Joanne Hillis-trained 4yr-old will load into barrier 11, and Muniandy plans to not hustle her out of the gates too much.
''If she settles pretty good behind other horses, she'll be really hard to beat with the way she's worked at home last week.
''If I get one big run, that will be ideal.''
Agnus Brown may be Muniandy's best chance, but he has a good opinion of Curtain Call in the 2200m maiden.
The 5yr-old mare is yet to win from 20 starts, but this will be just her second South Island start after a good debut run for third at Ashburton for West Melton trainers Tony and Lyn Prendergast.
''It ran a good race and it had missed a bit of work before the run, so tomorrow I think it's a good chance,'' Muniandy said.
''It's normally an on-pace runner, so if I jumped well, I'd look to get close to the fence. That last start will get him fitter.''
Muniandy may duck for cover with Swami in the rating 75 1400m after the gelding drew barrier 1. The son of Ishiguru should handle the heavy track, as two of his three wins have come on rain-affected surfaces.
''It should handle the track no worries.
''We'll try and get a bit of cover. He's not a big horse and he's carrying 57kg.
''Hopefully, he can find the line all right.''
Harry Hill rounds out Muniandy's four rides for the day in race 7, as he gets fit for a jumping campaign.
