Chaparella is well placed to resume racing on a winning note at Ascot Park tomorrow.

She has not raced since May and won fresh up in a rating 75 1200m on a slow track at Wingatui last September, under 58.5kg, when Kylie Williams was the rider.

Chaparella has 59kg in a rating 85 1200m tomorrow with the same rider. The track was rated a slow (9) yesterday. Chaparella won twice at Ascot Park last season over 1600m on slow and good tracks.

Steven Prince, her North Taieri trainer, is not concerned that Chaparella has not had a trial this season as she did last spring before her first race.

"She is just fine. She was not quite ready when the trials were held," he said.

Prince had a scare with Ric O'Shea before the gelding finished on for sixth in the Coupland's Mile Prelude at Riccarton on Saturday.

"When I went to pick him up at the visitor's barn at 1 o'clock, he was shaking like a leaf and dripping with sweat. I was so concerned that I got the vet to check him out when I went to the saddling stalls," Prince said.

"He had settled down by then and the vet could find nothing amiss."

Prince is looking on the positive side.

"He did over-race and if he was not quite right, his run was good. I had his blood done on Monday and it was 100%."

He plans to return to Riccarton on October 28 with Ric O'Shea.

Ortem Fire, the South Island filly of the year last season, resumes tomorrow with Toni Direen claiming 2kg in a rating 75 1360m. Ortem Fire has 59.5kg.

She has not raced since finishing a close second to Asavant in the Warstep Stakes (2000m) at Riccarton in April.

Apprentice Doni Prastiyou has retained the mount on Inferno in the open 1600m. He can claim 4kg for the mare who has 59kg. Inferno ran a bold race fresh up for fourth over 1400m at Wingatui on September 26 with Prastiyou the rider. The Brian and Shane Anderton-trained Inferno won the 2011 Canterbury Gold Cup on a slow track.

She has been nominated for the New Zealand Cup.

Ortem Fire ran Natuzzi close in the Southland Guineas on a slow track.

The Solitaire and The Glitzy One, good middle distance performers from the stable of Steve Anderton last season, are set to resume at Waimate on Monday over 1200m.

Trainer Peter Moody is hoping his weight-for-age star Manighar will replicate his autumn form and rebound in the Caulfield Stakes on Saturday, to strengthen his chances for the Cox Plate, AAP reports.

Manighar was an unlucky runner-up in the Makybe Diva Stakes before struggling into sixth place in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on September 22.

"I'm happy with where he is at. His run wasn't that bad in the Underwood, beaten three and a-half lengths. Everyone seemed disappointed bar me," Moody said.

"It was second up, and he was flat like that at his second up run in the autumn, when he ran his worst race.

"But he must be running well in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m) to be a real chance in the Cox Plate. I'm expecting him to do so."

Manigharworked at Caulfield on Tuesday morning over 1600m in 1.50.25, dashing home the last 600m in 35.05 on the steeple grass.
