Racing: First three-time winner

Hypnotize became the first horse to win the Pakuranga Hunt Cup three times at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The race has been run at a totalisator meeting since 1915 when the Pakuranga Hunt was granted a permit.

Hypnotize had previously been among eight horses to win the race twice.

He won in 2007 and 2008 and finished fourth last year.

His next assignment is the $85,000 Great Northern Steeplechase on September 4.

He won the Northern in 2007 and 2008 with 65kg and 68.5kg. He carried 70kg on Saturday, the biggest weight carried to win a Pakuranga Hunt Cup since Brookby Song won the race with 74.5kg in 1946.

Hypnotize carried 7kg above the minimum as an 11yr-old. Brookby Song carried 17kg above the minimum as a 6yr-old.

Hypnotize carried 64kg and 67.5kg in his other Pakuranga Hunt Cup wins.

He carried 69.5kg when he finished second in the Northern last year.

Hunterville is the only horse to win the Great Northern three times.

He carried 66.5kg or 9.5kg above the minimum in his third win in 1985.

Hypnotize has five wins, a second and a fourth from seven starts over country at Ellerslie.

His race on Saturday was his first start over fences since the Northern last year.

Trainer and part-owner Raymond Connors gave him three flat races as a lead up.

Isaac Lupton, who has ridden Hypnotize in all his major wins, has also won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup on Bart in 2005 and Real Tonic (2006).

Hypnotize, a gelding by Yamanin Vital from Auburn Rose, was bred by Hec, Brian and Lorraine Anderton.

He was purchased by Ray and Mark Connors for $20,000 at the 2001 South Island Sale of 2yr-olds.

He has now earned $316,000.

He did not begin racing until a rising 6yr-old and his 12 wins and seven minor placings come from 37 starts.

Coats Choice was represented by his second winner from his first New Zealand crop when Five Coats won the race for 3yr-olds at Ashburton yesterday.

Coats Choice was represented by the winner Flash Hapi at Ruakaka on August 6.

Coats Choice, a son of Redoute's Choice, commenced stud duty in Australia in 2005 and transferred to the Berkley Stud of Edwina Morris and Allan Jones at Greenpark the following year.

Five Coats and Flash Hapi were bred by Berkley Stud.

Flash Hapi, out of the Centaine mare Elle Taine, was sold for $17,000 at the NZ Bloodstock festival sale at Karaka, He was resold for $45,000 to patrons of the Ruakaka stable of Kenny and Lisa Rae at the Ready To Run sale.

He has his next start in the Wanganui Guineas on September 4.

Five Coats is trained by Peter and Dawn Williams.

"Peter selected her in the paddock. He wanted a filly for clients and we have retained a share," Morris said.

Five Coats is from Electric Avenue, by Hector Protector.
