Racing: Laking gains ride on Miss Millbrook

Jason Laking has replaced Chris Johnson as the rider of Miss Millbrook in the Southland Guineas on Saturday.

Johnson is riding The Meista in the Championship Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday. The Meista is on trial for the New Zealand Derby a fortnight later.

Johnson rode Miss Millbrook to a last-start win in the Dunedin Guineas (1400m) at Wingatui on January 31.

The Derby is the same day as Miss Millbrook is scheduled to race in the Lowland Stakes (2100m) and stablemate Lesley Brook in a 2yr-old race at Trentham. The Lowland is a lead up to the New Zealand Oaks.

The Terry Kennedy-trained pair will be accompanied to Trentham by Inferno from the Brian and Shane Anderton stable. Inferno, who is also in the Southland Guineas, ran third in the Dunedin Guineas.

She has been given top weight of 58.5kg at Invercargill. "We were expecting that," Karen Parsons, her co-trainer, said.

She carried 52.5kg at Trentham and has effectively been raised 5kg. "We have had trouble getting a rider," Parsons said.
