Trevor Cross has always known a little bit about horsepower.

Most of that has been related to what is under the bonnet, with the Gore man involved in car dealerships for his working life.

But he also has a horse with a big motor and that horse - The Wrath Of Robyn - gave Cross his biggest thrill in racing when he beat a smart field in the group 3 4 and 5yr-old championship at Forbury Park on Thursday night.

Cross first took out a training licence in 2002 as he started to ease back from his work, selling up his dealership 10 years ago, although he chips in nowadays at another dealership in town.

But the training had not been too successful - until The Wrath Of Robyn came along.

The son of Southland sire Washington VC provided Cross with his first training win in April 2013 and has now added another seven - although Thursday night's win now sits at the top of the pile.

''That's the best, really - we've always known he's had a motor, all right,'' Cross said.

''He's just had a bit of bad luck and he's finally getting his standing start manners - that's the big thing about it.

''This is the best win I've ever had, that's for sure. We won the Wyndham Cup and that was pretty special.''

The Wrath Of Robyn has always shown strength and speed and it's been a case of waiting for the manners to come into line.

Cross has turned down some healthy offers for the horse over the past two seasons, and that faith was rewarded on Thursday.

His loyalty to junior driver Craig Ferguson was also rewarded.

Ferguson has been in the sulky behind The Wrath Of Robyn in 32 of his 34 starts and Thursday night's win - the biggest for Ferguson in his short career - was just one of four winners he drove on the card.

It was a cracking drive too in what turned out to be a tactical affair, with Ricky May, driving Mossdale Conner, not yielding the lead to Isaiah and Tim Williams.

Venus Serena also got caught wide, while Ferguson guided The Wrath Of Robyn into the perfect spot one-out and one back before dropping down to the markers on the bend and taking the passing lane to win in a track-record time of 3.21.3.

''He's a pretty handy horse; he's just been making the odd mistake, which you can't do these days,'' Ferguson said.

''When he gets things all right, he's pretty good.''

Ferguson's four wins at Forbury Park took him to 25 wins for the season, passing his 2013-14 tally of 24.

That tally was helped along by a four-win day at Wyndham in February and a treble at Winton a week later.

''I started out fairly slowly and I was getting a wee bit worried, but just lately things have come good and I'm really enjoying it.

''It's pretty exciting to get a group win - it's obviously the goal.''
