Racing: May headed to Westport

Reinsman Ricky May is making his first visit to Westport for five years mainly to drive Ten Diamonds, the in-form mare, trained by his father, Terry.

Ten Diamonds, who is in race 8 today, has not finished further back than third in five starts. She won a maiden race at Orari last month with Jim Curtin the driver.

Ricky was in Sydney to drive Monkey King in the Miracle Mile that day.

Ten Diamonds subsequently finished second to Salem at Methven.

The 4yr-old is raced by Ricky's wife, Judy, with Mr and Mrs Laurence Hanrahan.

Ten Diamonds is the first foal of Ruby Wax, a Falcon Seelster mare who qualified but did not race.

''The one-win horses are racing for $10,000 at Westport which is an incentive to make the trip,'' May said. ''I have also managed to secure 10 drives.''

Franco Jackson (race 10) and Lindt (race 9) are in-form drives for May. Franco Jackson was a last-start winner at Methven. He is trained at Westport by Karen O'Dea and won on his home track 12 months ago.

Lindt, trained at Stratford by Ian Marsh, has been placed in her last four starts.

May is on Cullini in the Westport Cup. She could be up against it from a 40m handicap although Star Of Utopia won from 50m in 1994.

May won the Westport Cup in three successive years from 1999 with The Tough Nut, Panky's Pacer and Premium Reserve.

The Tough Nut was trained by Hanrahan, who collected the West Coast bonus that year. It was shared with his other horse Extraordinaire.

Panky's Pacer and Premium Reserve were trained by Robert Dunn, who has McKay engaged today.

May drove Dr Doolittle (twice) and The Current Operator to win over the two days of the 2005 Westport meeting. Both horses were trained by Terry.

Ruby Wax, the dam of Ten Diamonds, is a half-sister to The Current Operator.

May will be reunited with Stylish Monarch in the National Trot at Alexandra Park on Friday.

He will drive Carabella in the Sires' Stakes Fillies Championship.
