Racing: Sweeney out for six days from tomorrow

Five jockeys received suspensions following Saturday's meetings of the Taumarunui Racing Club at Te Rapa and the Levin Racing Club at Awapuni.

Senior jockey Mark Sweeney was handed the largest suspension - six days - after admitting to careless riding on Wattle Bay in the rating 65 2100m.

Wattle Bay was leading when he drifted out over the last 200m forcing Sharakti to cover a considerable amount of extra ground. Wattle Bay's connections did not contest a protest instigated by the stipendiary stewards and Sharakti was promoted to first.

Sweeney's suspension begins tomorrow. He is free to ride again on August 9.

Apprentice rider Kei Chiong was given a five-day suspension after admitting to careless riding on the rating 75 1200m, when she allowed her mount Danrose to shift in near the 850m mark, checking Airfield Road. Her suspension begins on Friday and ends on August 9.

Dylan Turner was unable to make the weight of 53kg on Mini Pearl in the Taumarunui Cup, and was suspended for four days due to his poor record in failing to make the weight. He is unable to ride from August 4 to August 10.

Jonathan Riddell admitted a charge of careless riding at Awapuni in a 1400m maiden after he allowed his mount Hunter Street to drift out inside the last 100m, crowding Premeaux on to Gipsy Star. His suspension began yesterday and ends on August 5.

Robert Hannam received a two-day suspension after admitting to excessive use of the whip before the 200m in the rating 65 1600m. He was fined earlier in the day for the same offence in the opening race. His suspension started yesterday and he is able to ride again on Friday.

Amateur rider Bruce Smith was fined $100 at Oamaru on Monday for excessive use of the whip when riding Tickle My Fancy in the amateur riders' 2200m.
