John Dunn has been unlucky with Kotare Mahal twice, but it will not happen a third time as Dunn chases 100 season wins tonight at Addington.

Dunn, who turns 30 next month, is sitting on 99 season wins, having already smashed his season-best of 75 wins set in 2009-10. He has 13 chances, spread across Addington tonight and Rangiora on Sunday, to break the ton.

But the nerves might be completely gone by the time race one at Addington is done and dusted if Dunn has his way with Kotare Mahal.

The Mach Three gelding copped a bad check with 550m to go at Addington last week and not even the worst form analyst in the world would have missed his recovery to run fourth behind Handlebar Hank, making up at least eight lengths on the top four over the last 400m.

''The last two starts, he's had no luck at all,'' Dunn explained.

''With a wee bit of luck in running, you should see him winning that one.''

The barrier draw of six and the 2000m distance will see Dunn ignite Kotare Mahal from the mobile arm, after he has been forced to go back in his last two starts.

''He has got gate speed and I've got to go forward over the shorter trip and put him into the race this time and try and take luck out of it.''

If Kotare Mahal fails to deliver for Dunn, he's got a handy backup by the name of Mach Banner.

Mach Banner has had two runs since a spell, running second to Samuel James in June before a tough second behind Bit Of A Legend at Rangiora two weeks ago.

''The last two runs this time up have been super.

''He seems well within himself this week. With Safedra coming out, it would have to be my best show for the night.''

The Mach Three 6yr-old faces only five rivals tonight, and Dunn will be sticking to his new game plan with the gelding.

''I've been driving him for one run this time up, and he seems to be going a lot better, so I'll probably just stick with that.''

Dunn made an error when trying some new gear on Comenche (race 5). Comenche sat parked for the last lap at Addington but drifted outwards in the straight as he went on to finish fifth.

''That was my fault - I changed the gear and put a set of half-blinds on him. He normally has the Murphy [blind] on and it didn't work. We'll blame me for that one.

''He went near enough afterwards - it was a 1.58 mile rate and he did a lot of work in the running.''

Highview Conall might need some luck taking on the likes of Ideal Arden, while Doctor McDreamy (race 3), Flying Frances (race 7) and Lewis H (race 9) are place chances.

''Hopefully, come the last race at Addington, I've got the 100, so I don't have to wait until Sunday,'' Dunn said.
