The Steward Stakes-bound Natuzzi was crowned the Otago thoroughbred horse of the year at a function at Wingatui last night.

The Paul Richards-trained son of Coats Choice led the way for Otago-trained gallopers with a runaway win in the listed Lightning Handicap at Trentham in March.

Natuzzi won three times in his 4yr-old season, with his Trentham win backed up by a victory at Riccarton in late March and success at Omakau in early January.

He also placed behind Kekova in the listed Great Easter Stakes and flashed home for second behind Ric O'Shea in the White Robe Lodge Handicap at Wingatui in February.

Ric O'Shea's win in the Wingatui group 3 feature earned him the sprinter-miler title, while The Glitzy One added the Otago stayer of the year title to her South Island award won last week.

Apprentice riders Courtney Barnes and Toni Direen shared the jockey award after they both claimed 23 wins during the season, and their employers, Brian and Shane Anderton, picked up the trainers' award thanks to 24 wins throughout the 2012-13 season.

The trainers' strike rate award went to Richards who trained a winner every 6.83 starts and further accolades went the way of the owners of Natuzzi, Mosgiel couple Bill and Sandra Duell, who were named owners of the year thanks to wins with Natuzzi, Our Santana and two placings for Hernandez.

Blood Brotha's victories in the New Zealand and Wellington cups ensured the breeders' award stayed on the Taieri as the breeding of the son of Danzighill and Laura Dee was a joint effort between Brian and Lorraine Anderton and Brian's brother, Hec, and his wife, Pat.
