Of all the horses at Waikouaiti yesterday, few were better named than Buckwild.

The 4yr-old is - to put it mildy - a handful.

The son of Chinese Dragon was bought for $3000 out of the Matamata stable of Mike Moroney and Chad Ormsby after showing enough ability to win a 1200m maiden at Ellerslie in February.

But the gelding came with a caveat for new owners Jonny Cox, Steve Fleming, Paul ''The Irishman'' Kirby and Wobbly's Bar proprietor Robbie Munro when he arrived after his eighth at New Plymouth in late November.

''Chad said he goes all right - it's just that the brain wasn't working,'' Hoffman said.

Jamie Bates made the most of his No 1 barrier draw to run them along in front, going on to win by 3 lengths.

But that was after some theatrics at the stalls before the race.

''He was bucking and kicking and rearing when we were gearing him up - Batesy did well with him today.''

John Pitman extended his winning streak to four race meetings when Lukander finally rewarded punters with a second win yesterday.

The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained 4yr-old is traditionally sluggish from the barriers, but jockey David Walsh sent him forward with 800m to go and took over the lead.

He held on to win by three-quarters of a length from Keep Her Secret, although Michael Pitman was hoping Walsh would have a five-length lead at the top of the straight as per his instructions.

When asked if his brother might have horses in at Omakau tomorrow, Michael Pitman quipped ''we're starting to run out of horses''.
