Weight could be what stops leading Southland steeplechaser Tai Ho making a winning start to his jumping season at Riverton today.

The Ellis Winsloe trained 8yr-old must carry the mammoth weight of 71kg in his first steeplechase start of the season in today's restricted open event over 3400m.

That handicap and rider James Seivwright's 3kg claim gives Tai Ho's main rival, Delacroix, a massive 7.5kg weight advantage over him.

Tai Ho will carry his carded weight, with Invercargill jockey Stuart Higgins unable to claim any extra off the Gore jumper's back.

Delacroix has the advantage of having a run over hurdles leading into today's race.

Tai Ho has had two flat races to prepare for his return to jumping.

Stuart Higgins has a big hand in today's two jumping races.

He rides Banbury Lad in today's restricted open hurdle event over 2500m.

The Amanda Schwarz-trained 8yr-old bolted in by five and a-half lengths in his first hurdle start of the new jumping season at the Riverton Easter Carnival.

Rider James Seivwright's 3kg claim should not be such a key ingredient when he rides The Energizer in the event.

Despite Banbury Lad winning, the weight difference between the pair will be the same as it was in their last encounter.

Seivwright's 3kg claim means The Energizer will again carry 1.5kg less than Banbury Lad today.
