World champion Hamish Bond (North End) has the chance to add two more red coats to his CV at the national rowing championships at Lake Ruataniwha today.

Bond (25), who has won three world titles over the last four years, will be competing in the premier men's pair final and the coxless four. He has won both events for the last three years and will start as favourite.

The iron man of New Zealand rowing is teamed with Jade Uru in the pair. His old mate Carl Meyer and John Storey join them in the four.

The pair will be a clash of the titans. Bond's world championship partner Eric Murray is stroking the Waikato RPC pair and has David Eade as his partner.

The other big clash today is in the women's premier lightweight single sculls, where defending champion Lucy Strack (North End) will face a strong challenge from fellow internationals Louise Ayling (Central RPC) and Julia Edward (Waikato RPC).

The winner will take a step ahead in the race for a spot in the lightweight double sculls at the London Olympics. The lightweight single sculls is not an Olympic event.

Strack (21) took fastest time yesterday when she won her semifinal in 8min 01.41sec from Ayling, 8min 12.49sec and Lana Davison (Waikato RPC), 8min 18.46sec.

Edward won the other semi-final in 8min 05.71sec, from Alyce Pulford (Waikato RPC), 8min 09.94sec and Leah Stanley (Auckland), 8min 11.25sec. Strack will not be taking anything for granted because the entire field in the final is covered by just eight seconds on the ergometer test.

"Everyone in the field is dangerous," Strack said. "It's such a strong group. All of the girls have raced well at some stage during the summer and all have showed they have the pace and ability to win it.

"When it comes down to it, we will all need to look for that special row that will push us out in front."

The final starts at 9.30am.

It will be a busy day for Otago rowers today, with all crews having a strong chance of reaching the podium.

One of the best Otago performances in yesterday's semifinals came from the Otago club pair of Bryce Abernethy and Jack O'Leary, who won the novice men's double sculls in 7min 19.23sec and were 3.29sec in front of North Shore.

The Wanaka combination of James Redai and Jamie Bowley was third in 7min 23.92sec and also qualified for the final.

It was a good day for the Otago club, as 16-year-old Kavanagh College schoolgirls Hannah Duggan and Zoe McBride finished third in their semifinal in the club double sculls in 7min 57.61sec and qualified for the final. The race was won by North Shore, from Petone.

The Otago University club four of Peter McDowall, Trent Morris, Adam Garden, Matt McGovern and cox Aynsley Moore won their semifinal in 6min 47.12sec. Blenheim was second in 6min 50.01sec and Avon third in 6min 53.88sec.

Saasha Bruce (Wanaka) was second in the women's club single sculls in 8min 08.21sec and qualified for tomorrow's final. She was just 1.19sec behind winner Brittany Mace (Hamilton).
