The Maadi Cup — the pinnacle of New Zealand secondary school rowing — returns to Lake Ruataniwha and gets under way on Monday.
Thousands of Otago secondary school rowers will be looking to put their best oar forward throughout the week after strong performances at the recent South Island secondary school championships and for their clubs at the national championships.
That will include (clockwise from top) Dunstan High School double sculls Katherine Hoffman and Bella Breen; Otago Boys’ High School double Leo Garden and Ollie Scott; Columba College quad Livi Campbell, Lucy Earl, Charlotte Scott, Isla Peddie and cox Jade Bogue; and St Hilda’s Collegiate single Isla Turner, who all landed on the podium at the SISS. Other crews to keep an eye on include Bayfield rower Alexander Hatterell, who had a brilliant national championships for Otago, Otago Girls’ High School quad of Sienna Nicholson, Isla Marshall, Ally Ryan, Kiera Nicholson, Ruby Merriman, who won silver in the under-18 coxed quadruple sculls, Columba under-18 quad of Anika Leyser, Fenella Millen, Sarah Stephens and Nova Whisten and Queen’s High School under-15 quad of Ruby Bulger, Libby Clifton, Chloe Lyons and Addie Te Huna.
