Rowing: Success in South Island champs for Mount Aspiring College

Wanaka is fast emerging as a developing force in Otago rowing as was demonstrated at the South Island secondary schools championships at the weekend.

On Lake Ruataniwha on Sunday, the Mount Aspiring College boys under-18 lightweight double sculls of Jared Wellman and Jamie Bowley won the gold medal in 7min 13.75sec.

Defending Maadi Cup champions Hannah Duggan and Zoe McBride (Kavanagh) had a useful rehearsal for the Maadi tat Lake Ruataniwha later this month.

They teamed together to win the girls under-17 double sculls in 7min 56.75sec and the lightweight under-18 double sculls in 8min 8.16sec.

The St Hilda's crew of Claudia Dyet and Claudia Grave finished second in 8min 19.48sec.

McBride demonstrated her class when she easily won the girls under-17 single sculls in 8min 32.93sec. Briar Alexander (St Hilda's) was third.

An emerging Kavanagh College crew this year has been the novice double sculls of Polly McMullan and Anna O'Leary who won the novice double sculls in 8min 22.06sec.

The St Hilda's crew of Emily Smith andGeorgia Lepine was second in 8min 32.78sec.

Jack O'Leary (Kavanagh) was second in the boys under-17 single sculls in 7min 52.73sec.

It was a successful regatta for St Hilda's which had 12 crews reaching A finals and the school ended up with four silver medals and two bronze.

The under-18 lightweight four was second in 8min 00.89sec.

Oamaru twins Johanna and Caitlin Kearney (St Kevin's) finished second in the girls under-18 pair in 7min 21.15sec and the St Kevin's B crew of Lorin Haggerty and Eilee Robinson was third in 8min 36.09sec.

The Otago Girls High School under-18 double sculls of Cleo Gilmour and Caitlin Buist finished third in 7min 58.43sec.

Otago Boys' finished second in the boys under-17 quadruple sculls in 6min 56.98sec and Mount Aspiring was third in 6min 57.01sec.

Dunstan was third in the boys under-18 novice double sculls in 7min 49.50sec.
