Damian McKenzie is the Energizer bunny.

He just goes and goes and goes.

But tonight the bunny will have to be in his burrow.

McKenzie is going to have to be cool and calm as he steers the All Black ship around the park.

The task is not lost on the 23-year-old.

"It is an awesome opportunity for myself. I got a bit of game time there last week but it is my first start in the All Blacks No10 jersey so I’m really excited," he said.

"There are just little things to concentrate in my game, just around game management. Really trying to control the team. I have looked  at it this week.

"Just about going out there and really nailing my role."

McKenzie said it was about playing at the right end of the field and that involved him claiming territory when it was needed.

"It’s been good just to focus on 10 this week. The boys have been really good."

He said leading the side at training had been somewhat different.

"It is just about taking control. That is what the leaders of the team want us to do. Take control and stepping into that position and do what is needed to be done.

"It is just about being confident in yourself. When you start second-guessing yourself things get into bother. But it is just about controlling the game.

"That is what the team wants to hear. They want someone they can look back on and trust."

McKenzie, who hails from eastern Southland, said his family did not have as far to travel to the test this week and would be there in support.

The Chiefs utility has been an ever constant for his Super Rugby side in the past couple of years and rarely gets substituted. In 2016 he played every minute of the Super Rugby campaign for the Chiefs.

Although it is not set in stone he is unlikely to play 80 minutes tonight, as new boy Richie Mo’unga is itching to make his test debut in the second half.
