North Otago’s top coaches will go to battle when the Citizens Shield finally gets under way next weekend.
There is a plethora of talent on and off the field this season, with the union agreeing it was in its best interests to have the premier coaches involved in club rugby.
Valley capped off an unbeaten run last year to lift the shield under the tutelage of master coach Barry Matthews and right-hand man John Clunie.
They are back again this year in a bid to go back-to-back, but will be hopeful for more depth after being hit with injuries last season.
Heartland coach Jason Forrest is back home at Excelsior, and will be joined by assistant Kayne Middleton as they look to go one better from being beaten finalists last year.
Athletic Marist could be the one to watch this season with Tim Anderson at the helm.
The former Kurow coach — who led the Red Devils to their first Citizens Shield in 39 years in 2021 and backed up in 2022 — has taken over.
He has a wealth of experience in former Kurow player Tyler Burgess as assistant coach, and former Athies players Hayden James and Mason Kinzett in support.
Andrew Fisher remains at Kurow and will be supported by former captain Josh Reid.
They have been dealt a blow with former Highlander Hayden Parker out for the season, but Heartland back Hayden Todd, who travels from Cromwell, and lock Angus Foster return.
Maheno will be gunning to make the top four after missing out the last two seasons and will be coached by Marty McAtamney again.
Old Boys are light on numbers this year but will be in the mix too under coach Soni Tongotongo.
The format remains the same, with two full rounds before a three-week playoff series.
