Rugby: Club left short of forwards

University B defaulted its premier game to Green Island on Saturday as it was forced to loan two front-row players to the University A side.

University club captain Chris Burke contacted the Otago Daily Times and said a hooker and a prop from the B team were required as reserves for University A, in its quarterfinal clash with Harbour.

This left the B side with only two front-rowers to start on Saturday.

Burke said he started as early as last Monday trying to find out game times as he knew the club was running short of front-rowers because of representative commitments.

He tried to have the game against Green Island played earlier, at 1pm, but because of other club commitments that was not possible.

University colts' sides did not have enough fit-front rowers to fill the gaps.

Burke said this left the team with no option but to default to Green Island.

University A had nine players doing duty for Otago against Southland, while loose forward Adam Thomson played in the test at Carisbrook.

The University B side has not won a game this season.

Burke said the B side had defaulted in 2003 due to an absence of front-row players.

The team would travel to Heriot this week to play the home team and he was confident of fielding a full side.
