Rugby: IRB chief hopeful strong Fiji team will play in World Cup

IRB chief executive Mike Miller says Fiji will be at this year's Rugby World Cup and discussions are continuing with all parties.

New Zealand has imposed a travel ban on those connected with the Fijian military regime, which has led to negotiations involving the IRB to try to get the best Fijian team to the tournament. Many within the team and coaching staff have connections with Frank Bainimarama's Government.

Miller said it would be inappropriate to say what was going on in those discussions but he was always hopeful.

"Issues like this are better resolved behind the scenes where people can sit down calmly and quietly and work things through," he said.

When asked how confident he was of getting a successful resolution he said he could not really comment.

"I'm always hopeful. I'm a positive person. Things usually get resolved - not always to everyone's satisfaction, but people can normally live with the result."

He said Fiji would be attending the cup.

There had been talk of a boycott by Fiji but that had been dismissed by Fijian rugby officials yesterday.

"There will be a very good Fijian side here. Discussions are very good and I do not want to say too much more. Important things are taking place."
