Rugby: King's takes title on points differential

King's High School edged Otago Boys' High School on points differential to win the Otago secondary school touch championships at Bishopscourt at the weekend.

Both teams picked up three wins from their four competition games, and split the two head-to-head matches.

King's won the first match 4-2, while Otago Boys' hit back to beat its rival 6-5 in the second round.

Taylor Haugh, a New Zealand under-19 representative, battled through injury to help King's finish with a plus-nine points differential, three better than Otago Boys'.

St Hilda's Collegiate went unbeaten on its way to the girls title, winning two and drawing two. Columba College finished second, while Otago Girls' High School was third.

South Otago High School romped to the mixed title, winning all four of its games and finishing with a plus-29 points differential.

Matt Whaanga and Keita Burnside were particularly impressive for South Otago.

Tokomairiro High School finished second and Cromwell was third.

Five Otago players have been picked in New Zealand development junior squads.

Abbey Johnston and Celine Timoko have made the under-17 girls team, while Jordan Hand, Claudia Carruthers and Bridget Johnstone are in the under-15 mixed squad.
