May faced a judicial hearing over the weekend in France, where the New Zealand under-20 side is preparing for its semifinal against England tomorrow.
May was cited for making contact with the eye in the match against Ireland on June 14. He came on to the field in the second half as a replacement.
The 19-year-old denied the foul play, admitting he made contact with the eye or eye area but maintaining it was accidental.
Judicial officer Antony Davies, of England, upheld the complaint against May. Davies decided the matter fell within the low-end range of sanctions, saying the contact was reckless rather then intentional.
The low-end range sanction starts at 12 weeks and that was further reduced to eight weeks due to the fact it was reckless and no-one was injured.
May is out of the rest of the tournament and will not be free to play again until September 14.
May could appeal the decision but it was unclear yesterday whether New Zealand Colts management would pursue that option.
Two Otago players have bene named to start the semifinal. Faasiu Fuatai will play on the left wing and Michael Collins at second five-eighth.
Tei Walden will be on the bench.
