Toby Morland and David Hall will get rare starts for the Highlanders when they play their crunch game against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Morland replaces Jimmy Cowan, and Hall replaces Jason Macdonald, with both men to make just their second starting appearances of the season.

Other changes to the side beaten 26-16 by the Stormers last weekend are at lock, where Hoani MacDonald is restored to the starting line-up and Hayden Triggs goes to the bench, and at openside flanker, where Tim Boys replaces Alando Soakai.

Soakai has not recovered from a knee injury and the Highlanders were to decide overnight whether to send him home early from the road trip.

Highlanders coach Glenn Moore has shown faith in centre Brett Mather, who gets his first opportunity for consecutive starts, and winger Fetu'u Vainikolo, who starts his 11th consecutive game despite dropping off in form in the last two weeks.

Mike Delany remains at first five-eighth after playing well against the Stormers in the absence of the injured Daniel Bowden and James Wilson.

Macdonald, Triggs and Cowan are in the reserves, as is loose forward George Naoupu, who will have the chance to make his Highlanders debut after being called in as a replacement.

The Highlanders travelled to Bloemfontein from Cape Town overnight.

Their game against the Cheetahs kicks off at 5.10am on Saturday (NZ time).
