Rugby: Otago Boys, Gore dominant

Lock Josh Dickson dominated the lineout and played a key role in Otago Boys' High School's 57-0 win over St Kevin's College at Oamaru yesterday.

Dickson not only won his own ball but took a lot off St Kevin's throws as well to enable the strong Otago Boys pack to drive from the lineout.

It was one of the two opening games of the Highlanders secondary schools rugby competition for the first XVs of schools in Otago and Southland.

The wet ball made it difficult for the backs and it took some time for the game to settle down. But once into the groove the Otago backs played attractive running rugby.

Otago Boys' led 29-0 at the break and added four more tries in the second spell.

Flanker Brodie Hume had a dynamic game and first five-eighth Auleki Morris was able to break the St Kevin's defensive line.

The experienced Michael Collins was the solid rock in the midfield with his strong defence and his ability to kick tactically for the corners.

Fullback Tim O'Malley had a strong game on defence for St Kevin's and prop Quinn McNab was solid in the scrum.

Gore High School went on a 13-try spree in the other competition match against Verdon College yesterday, with Allan Taplin scoring four tries on one wing and Hayden Stephen three on the other. Gore won 75-13 after leading 41-13 at halftime.
