Rugby: Search for cup volunteers

The hunt for volunteers for next year's World Cup begins next week, with a national campaign to enlist helpers.

Dunedin will host two seminars on June 14 at the Glenroy Auditorium.

The first seminar will be from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, and the second from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

Sport Otago operations manager Duane Donovan said the seminars would outline the work to be done by volunteers, which would include greeting visitors at the airport and being stationed at the information centre.

Most match-day officials and work inside the stadium would be co-ordinated by the Otago Rugby Football Union.

Donovan said the registration process would take place online and acceptance was not guaranteed. Aspiring volunteers would be interviewed.

As for how many volunteers were needed in Dunedin, it was still a guessing game, he said.

Numbers were still being worked through.

Dunedin will host three games: Scotland against Georgia on September 14, England against an as yet unknown opponent on September 24 and Ireland against Italy on October 2.

Though it was hard to know how many visitors would descend on Dunedin, England and Scotland were bound to have large numbers of supporters, while the game between Ireland and Italy would provide plenty of interest.

Dunedin City Council events co-ordinator Kim Newman said there had been an early indication 400 to 1200 volunteers would be required for Dunedin but that was a ballpark figure.

She said people could pre-register when they attended the seminars but there was a lot of information to come from World Cup organisers.

She was confident Dunedin would get enough volunteers as the city had a good record of helping out with events such as the Masters Games.

It would be a good way to get involved in an event which might not return to New Zealand, she said.
