Rugby: St Kevin's scores third win

The accurate goal kicking of Tim O'Malley helped St Kevin's College gain its third win of the season in Oamaru on Saturday.

He converted the five tries and added a penalty to give St Kevin's a 38-26 win over Menzies College in the Highlanders First XV competition.

St Kevin's led 21-5 at the break and added two more tries in the second spell.

A strong forward display, led by No 8 Ash Miller, lock Sione Misola and prop Quinn McNabb, provided the foundation for the win. They got the front-foot ball that enabled the backs to cut loose out wide. Centre Gaston Bazan and winger Michael Hannigan scored first-half tries.

In last year's round-robin section of the competition, St Kevin's won only two games. The young team has already has a better record.

Dunstan High School gained its second win of the season when it beat Kavanagh College 17-8 in Dunedin.

Dunstan has lost four games by narrow margins this season and was determined not to let this game slip out of its grasp when it led 17-3 at the break, after scoring three tries.

The best players were second five-eighth Sam Galletly, who scored two tries, and rugged No 8 Kyle Harris, who also scored.

Dunstan blew six other scoring chances when the ball was lost when players were over the line.

Winger Daniel Dam scored three of King's High School's 10 tries when it beat James Hargest High School 65-3 in Invercargill.

First five-eighth Mackenzie Haugh scored two tries and kicked six conversions for 22 points, taking him past 100 points in the competition this season.

Other players to shine for King's were prop Ben McKinlay and centre Aranui Crofts.

Waitaki Boys' High School lost its first game of the season when it was beaten 26-17 by Southland Boys' High School, in Invercargill.

Waitaki led 17-12 at halftime but Southland Boys' pounced on mistakes in the second spell to win the game.

Gore High School scored seven tries when it beat South Otago High School 44-19, in Gore. The win was set up by the forwards, where prop Bevan Bolger and No 8 Logan McKee had strong games.

In the other game, Otago Boys' High School beat John McGlashan College 55-0.

Otago Boys' remains unbeaten and leads the Highlanders First XV competition with 40 points, followed by Waitaki Boys' 34, Southland Boys' 30 King's 30, Gore 26, South Otago 21, St Kevin's 14, Dunstan 13, Menzies 11, John McGlashan 10, James Hargest 3, Kavanagh 1.
