Rugby: Sydney trip a no-brainer for Parker

Part of the task for any injured rugby player is going to see your team play.

Stand on the sideline and cheer on your side.

But injured Highlanders first five-eighth Hayden Parker went to some extremes on the weekend to see his side play.

Parker dipped into his own pocket and spent about $1000 to journey to Sydney to see his Highlanders team-mates defeat the Waratahs and make the Super rugby final.

Parker, who was forced to have an operation on his shoulder in early May which ended his season, said it was just something he wanted to do and was prepared to pay for it.

''It was money well spent. You could not buy memories like that,'' he said.

Parker and a friend sat in the stands for the match and cheered on the Highlanders to a landmark win.

''It was a great atmosphere but luckily the guys took the crowd out of the game early on. There were quite a few Highlanders fans there. They made a bit of noise as the game went on.''

Parker (24) said it was simply a no-brainer when thinking about heading to Sydney.

''It is not very often the Highlanders get to make a semifinal. You don't want to miss that.''

He went into the Highlanders changing room afterwards and congratulated his team-mates on a mighty victory.

It was a quick trip, arriving in Sydney on Saturday morning, going to the game and arriving back in Dunedin on Sunday night.

But the air miles are again going to get a boost as the jetting about is not over yet for Parker.

He is planning a trip to Wellington on Saturday for the big final against the Hurricanes and was busy yesterday trying to get his hands on a ticket.

After all going all the way to Sydney for a semifinal, then a trip to Wellington for a final is an absolute given.
