The Otago side got its training camp under way yesterday and will not have to look far for guidance in the coming season.

The side is spending three nights based in Waikouaiti, sleeping at the Girl Guide camp, and will train at East Otago High School each day.

But the camp will not be all about chasing a ball around a paddock, as there are other activities planned .

Team manager Paul McLaughlan said as well as training, the side would be put through its paces in other ways.

First up was a surf carnival at Waikouaiti beach yesterday, with the players braving the chilly mid-winter sea, while a run up Puketapu hill would take place this afternoon.

He also had fishing and team games scheduled, to bring variety to the camp.

The camp started yesterday with coach Steve Martin naming an Otago support XV who will give players advice and guidance during the season.

Included in the XV are such Otago players as former All Black first five-eighth Duncan Robertson and former Otago captain Kelvin Middleton.

Members of the XV spoke to the players about the legacy of the Otago jersey and the pride they had in the jersey.

The Otago side was beaten 45-10 by Wellington on Friday afternoon, in its last warm-up game before the Air New Zealand Cup.

Joining the camp were Maori representatives props Keith Cameron and Glen Horton.

The side starts its cup campaign against Southland in Invercargill on August 2.
