As the new millennium dawned, the Otago women’s rugby team ushered in a new era when they took
on the Spirit moniker in 2000.
The Farah Palmer Cup team marks 25 years this season as the Spirit, and Otago Rugby are hosting a reunion this weekend when the unbeaten Championship team host the Taranaki Whio on Saturday.
Tomorrow, the Otago Daily Times launches a multi-part series called Spirit Week, celebrating 25 years of the Otago Spirit’s history on and off the field.
From the past players reliving their glory days as they paved the way, to the current crop reflecting on how much this team means to women’s rugby in the region and how far it can take you, this series will feature it all.

And, on Friday, we will unveil the ODT’s greatest Spirit XV from the past quarter of a century.
It is a special time to embrace and reflect on what makes women’s rugby in our patch of the country so special.
And here’s to another 25 years.
