Southland Boys' in limbo

Southland Boys' High School First XV believes it is team without a competition at the moment.

But the Otago Rugby Football Union says the side is being considered for a Dunedin competition and more will be known next week.

The school side has played in the Dunedin Metropolitan premier colts competition for the past three years but is sitting in limbo in regards to where it plays this season.

Southland Boys' High School first XV coach Jason Dermody said as the team stood at the moment it did not have a competition to play in.

The side joined the colts competition in 2015 after the southern region Highlanders First XV competition fell over.

Southland Boys' played in the colts competition as the tougher competition improved its rugby.

Dermody said his players had enjoyed the higher standard of rugby and felt club sides had enjoyed playing in Invercargill.

In 2015, Southland Boys' had subsidised clubs to play in the city.

With Otago Boys' High School First XV back in the Otago premier schools competition, Dermody said that might create a bye in the premier colts competition. Clubs did not want a bye so Southland Boys' could be on the outer.

He was unsure of where the team would end up.

There were alternatives to play in Southland but they had drawbacks - playing against older players or against weaker school sides.

Southland Boys' made the national top four competition last year.

Otago Rugby Football Union community rugby manager Richard Perkins said they were waiting to hear from clubs on whether they would be entering colts teams in premier or junior colts grades.

Once they knew that - probably some time next week - they would know more about the format of the competition and where Southland Boys' would fit in the overall picture.

He said it was preferable to not have a bye in the competition.

Premier club play starts on March 24 but the colts competition is likely to start no earlier than April 14.
