It is a collector's item. The cricket ball used when the Otago Volts won the State Shield will be auctioned at next week's Otago Sports Awards dinner in the Dunedin Town Hall.

Sport Otago chief executive John Brimble said yesterday the ball was donated to Sport Otago by the Dunedin City Council.

The mounted ball is signed by the Mayor of Dunedin, Peter Chin, and by Otago captain Craig Cumming.

It celebrates Otago's win against Auckland at Eden Park, the first win in a major national senior cricket competition for 20 years.

The chief executive of Otago Cricket, Ross Dykes, has donated an Otago Volts shirt that will also be auctioned.

Sport Otago has other items, including skiing and golf packages, to be auctioned at the dinner to raise funds for the Halberg Trust that helps children with disabilities.

Brimble said the "House full" sign has been put up, with all 520 tickets sold for the dinner at the Town Hall a week today.

A new award has been introduced this year to recognise organisations or individuals who have introduced innovation in sport.

"It may not be awarded to sports people themselves, but it will recognise an individual or organisation that has made a significant contribution to sport in the province," Brimble said.

"It could recognise significant facilities, a new technical innovation or give recognition to someone or a group that has shown entrepreneurial initiative and flair that brings national or international recognition to Otago.

"There was no existing award that acknowledged people doing work at that level."

The guest speaker for the awards dinner will be Phil Kingsley-Jones, well known as a player agent for All Black Jonah Lomu.
