Sam Morris could be one to watch.
The young Wānaka swimmer led the way, breaking two Otago records at the Junior Makos Festival in Invercargill at the weekend.
Morris broke the Otago 11 years 100m backstroke record with his time of 1min 13.27sec.
He broke Sam Caradus’ record of 1min 13.52sec that had stood since 1995.
Morris was in fine form a day earlier to break his own record as well.
He swam 2min 34.97sec to reset the Otago 11 years 200m backstroke record that he set at the Alexandra Challenge Cup last month.
He shaved 2.27sec off the previous record.
Otago’s team of 51 rising swimmers at the event - which features athletes aged 12 and under from all across the South Island - produced strong results over three days.
They returned home with 57 podium finishes and a whopping 200-plus personal best times across all disciplines.
It is a busy month for Otago’s swimmers.
Many will now prepare for the South Island long-course championships in Christchurch next weekend, and the national division two championships are at Moana Pool from March 20 to 22.
