Top seeds Vaughan Kingi and Libby Scott claimed the Otago Open titles this weekend with clear cut wins in the finals.
Kingi regained the title he won two years ago by being too steady for Sam Poulter (North Harbour) in a match played in a swirling wind.
The score was 6-2, 6-3.
Poulter, a tertiary student in Dunedin, was the more brilliant and hit several flashing winners, but he was also the more erratic.
"In the tough conditions it came down to trying to hold serve into the wind," Kingi said, "and I was able to hang in there and do that."
Coulter struggled to do the same and that caused the final margin.
Earlier, Poulter had won the battle of the left handers when he played brilliantly to out-hit second seed Oliver Petri, formerly of Canterbury and now from Waikato. 6-4 6-4.
He used heavy topspin to control the ball effectively in the wind.
Otago's Jeff Elliotte played his best match of the season to push Kingi to a close three-setter in the other semifinal.
Elliotte used a bustling, net rushing game, with crisp volleys and smashes, but Kingi was able to come back and finish with a little more consistency to close out the third set 6-3.
The women's final saw Scott beat her St Hilda's team mate Georgia Hume 6-1, 6-2.
It was a case of a talented and more experienced 17-year-old against a talented 15-year-old.
Both players hit the ball impressively but it Scott often held control of rallies and was able to end many of them in her favour.
Like Kingi, Scott had also won the title two years ago.
Earlier Hume was impressive in allowing Paula Ferguson only three games on her return to tournament play and would have learned from her experience.
Shaun Paringatai and Campbell Higgins were the best of the other Otago players and were eliminated by the top two seeds after good wins in previous rounds.
