Five hurt in 'horrific' crash
Five people were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital after a two-car crash in Cardrona Valley Rd yesterday afternoon. The 4.40pm crash occurred about 7km from Wanaka, between Mt Barker Rd and Cardrona. A grey Nissan Cefiro travelling north had crossed the centre-line and collided with a south-bound grey Hyundai, Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell, of Wanaka, said last night. However, ''it's too early to determine a cause until the investigators have a look at it''.

Highway smash; two in hospital
The drivers of two vehicles were airlifted to Oamaru and Dunedin Hospitals with serious injuries after a head-on crash on State Highway 1 at the southern entrance to Maheno. Senior Constable Darrin Low from Hampden said the men suffered serious injuries in the smash, which involved a utility towing a trailer, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle. State Highway 1 was closed in both directions between 8.30am and 11am yesterday, following the crash.
